Your teaching has moved forward. Has the way you deliver theory kept up? A PDF can hold useful information, but a folder of documents does not tell a student where to begin, what to do next or how to ask for help.
If your academy spends more time finding files and answering repeat messages than supporting learning, it may be time to rethink the experience.
When the attachment becomes the admin
Picture a student opening their course after a busy day. They have a welcome email, several downloads and a message with an updated worksheet. Which version should they use? Where should they send their answer?
The problem is not necessarily the material. It is the journey around it. A clear theory portal brings the starting point, lesson sequence and next action together.
Keep the useful material. Improve the journey.
You do not need to throw away everything you have written. Start by organising one unit into short lessons. Give each lesson a clear title, explain what the student should learn and finish with an action that helps them apply it.
- Use reading cards for the key ideas.
- Add relevant images with explanations, rather than decoration alone.
- Use a scenario question to explore a decision.
- Tell students where to submit work and find feedback.
A downloadable reference sheet can still be useful. It works best when students understand how it fits into their course.
Make the next step obvious
For each lesson, ask three questions: what should the learner understand, what should they do, and how will they know they can move on? This keeps the focus on learning rather than simply opening files.
For practical subjects, online theory supports preparation and revision. It should sit alongside the practical teaching and assessment your course requires.
Try one unit before moving everything
Choose a unit that currently generates lots of questions. Check the content, remove duplicate versions and organise it in the order you teach. Ask a tutor and a learner to try the journey, then use their feedback to improve it.
Agree where future updates will live. Otherwise, a new portal can become another place to search rather than your academy’s main learning space.
